Flexcomm deliver a complete network cabling solution to a variety of businesses, across all industry sectors. Our expert engineers work with you to provide a tailored solution.

Data Cabling Types

An Ethernet cable is the most common type of network cable used within networks and with the importance of the “Internet of Things”, businesses are seeing more and more wiring and cabling within their networks as more devices now require their own internet connection. Add to this that fact that ethernet cables connect devices such as PCs, routers, VOIP phones, video conferencing, CCTV, Access Control, BMS are rapidly becoming the norm in offices, creating a demand that conventional wiring system often can’t handle within a local area network.

Data cables come in several different varieties including Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7, Cat8 and each cable has a different level of performance so therefore it is necessary to understand your company needs and choose the correct cable for the correct application. The most common category of cables used today are cat5e and cat6 cables but ethernet cables are constantly being upgraded and standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Each upgrade supports higher bandwidth speeds and improvement with noise cancellation.

The difference between each category cable can be difficult to recognize by the casual observer. However, every new generation cable offers copper pairs with tighter twists and more complex sheathing. As new upgrades become available the older Ethernet generation cables are becoming obsolete.

A modern, structured cabling system will not only make your business a neater and simpler environment, but it will also make your network far more efficient and reliable. Flexcomm deliver a complete network cabling solution to a variety of businesses, across all industry sectors. Our expert engineers will assess your business needs with a top down approach, to provide a tailored solution that works for you.

The effect of poor cabling can be detrimental to productivity. Older, traditional cabling is often too long, as devices are moved around the office without proper planning and preparation. Network cabling efficiency reduces over longer distances, which will have a negative impact on the efficiency and reliability of your network.

Our ethernet cabling solutions include:

Category 5e Cable

Cat5e has been one of the most used Ethernet cable in the last 10 years due to its ability to support Gigabit speed at cost effective prices. However, due to the updated CPR regulations & BS6701:2016+A1:2017, Cat5e is now starting to become obsolete as most manufactures are not developing the sheathing to comply with strict new guidelines within the industry.

What to expect from Cat 5e

  • Supports Gigabit Ethernet @ 100m
  • Doesn’t Support POE applications
  • Frequency Range 1 – 100 MHz

Category 6 Cable

Cat6 cable has thicker sheaths than cat5e cable, the thicker sheath helps protect against Near End Crosstalk (NEXT) and Alien Crosstalk (AXT).

Arguably the biggest advantage of choosing Cat6 over Cat5e is the ability to support POE over the network to power end user devices such as Wi-Fi AP’s, VOIP Phones, CCTV Cameras just to name a few

What to expect from Cat 6

  • Supports Gigabit Ethernet @ 100m
  • Supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet @ 55m
  • Supports POE applications
  • Frequency Range 1 – 250 MHz

Category 6a Cable

Cat6a supports bandwidth twice the amount of Cat6 cable, at a standard frequency rate of 500MHz, making it the ideal choice for high speed data transfers and video streaming and can support 10Gig at 100 meters. Cat6a sheathing is also more robust helping eliminate alien crosstalk (AXT) even further than Cat6, the stronger sheathing makes the cable thicker than regular cat6.

What to expect from Cat 6a

  • Supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet @ 100m
  • Supports POE applications
  • Frequency Range 1 – 500 MHz

Category 7a Cable

Cat7 offers extensive shielding to reduce signal attenuation and is relatively stiff in comparison to previous generations of cabling. Both individual pairs are shielded, with an additional layer of shielding over the entire cable. The shielding needs to be grounded and Cat7 also requires special GigaGate45 (GG45) connectors to take full advantage of higher performance features.

What to expect from Cat 7a

  • Supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet @ 100m
  • laboratory testing has successfully shown its ability to transmit up to 40 Gb at 50 meters and even 100 Gb at 15 meters
  • Supports POE applications
  • Frequency Range 1 – 1000 MHz
  • Choice of RJ45 or GG45 connectors

Pre-Terminated Copper

Our Specialist Support Services include pre-terminated copper assemblies, which are ideal in situations where installation timeframes are limited.

What are the benefits of Pre-Terminated Copper?

  • Reduces installation costs
  • Reduces installation times by as much as 75%
  • Reduces equipment and specialist labour costs
  • Fully tested, fully traceable – 100% inspected before leaving the factory and 100% tested again upon installation.
  • Covered by the 25-year system warranty when installed by an accredited partner
  • Environmentally friendly – reduces waste onsite
  • Maximises cable usage
